Once we signed our contact with our builder I assumed the hardest parts were done and it would be smooth sailing from there. Boy was I wrong.
Being the impatient control freak that I am I could not let go of the process and wanted to be involved as much as I could. After we received the quote we decided what we would do ourselves (with the help of my father). Our to do list consisted of :
- Plumbing
- Electrical
- Flooring
- Painting
- Outside Stonework
- Fireplace
- Backsplash
- Countertops (When your lifelong BFF runs a Granite Business you could say we got special treatment)
- Staircase Railing
On July 3, 2017, we finally broke ground.
Its crazy how small the hole looked in the middle of that huge field. My husband and I were worried sick (like laying awake at night thinking about it sick) that we didn’t make the house big enough. It literally looked like the size of a living room. One day while we were there one of the excavators was still there and I asked him if it was an illusion. He assured me that once there were walls it would make a huge difference. I have never put so much faith in a stranger… thank God he was right.
At this point we had been living with my in-laws for four months. I know that may not seem like that long, but as someone who moved out at 17 and never lived with anyone BUT her husband for the last 8 years, I was loosing my mind. So in true “Krissy Fashion” we loaded up with our best friends and flew to Florida for a week.
Turns out a week of vitamin sea was just what we needed.
We had a great trip, but we were so ready to be home to see if there was any progress on the house. It rained a lot while we were gone, but we were so happy to see some concrete when we returned! Turns out the excavator was right. My husband looked so tiny in that open basement.
Corey (my hubby) and I would rush out to the house every day after work. Some days were exciting, some were extremely disappointing, and some even sparked some tears. It’s truly amazing the whirlwind of emotions that comes with building a house. But finally, 43 long excruciating days later… WE HAD FRAMING.
